2.3 million driver licences set to expire – how many are on your fleet?

A recent Freedom of Information request by Co-Op Insurance found that a staggering 2.3 million driving licences are set to expire in 2025, while more than 300,000 driving licences that expired in 2024 have yet to be renewed.

These startling statistics have significant ramifications for effective fleet management if just one of those drivers is on your fleet.

Fines for driving with an expired licence can be as high as £1,000 plus six penalty points, while employers can face significant legal exposure under Duty of Care regulations. It can also invalidate insurance cover.

“Ensuring driving licences are checked and compliant is fundamental to effective fleet safety and to manage driver risk,” commented James Riordan, IT & Fleet management Director at CBVC Vehicle Management.

“But too often we see fleets that come to us relying on trusted spreadsheets and manual licence checking that’s not only time consuming but leaves the potential for too many errors and omissions that could be highly detrimental under a company’s Duty of Care to employees. With our automatic driver licence checking, at a stroke such risk is eliminated.”

CBVC Vehicle Management offers fleets a driver-friendly online system that gathers together all the information required.

The platform will electronically check for licence validity, the number of penalty points on a licence, and then re-check these details at specified regular intervals. It will also provide alerts if a driver attracts more penalty points, risk scoring the driver based on factors such as entitlement held, endorsement type and points.

This risk model is further enhanced with online driver training designed to positively impact driving behaviour and minimise occupational road risk. Drivers benefit from a mobile app, with helpful notifications along the learning journey and, access to a knowledge hub of materials, including the DVSA question bank and the Highway Code.

“Given the scale of licence expiration uncovered by Co-Op Insurance, it’s critical that fleets should be adequately covered,” added James.
