Cold weather and EV range: what drivers need to know this winter

Cold weather has a bigger effect on electric cars than many drivers realise. As temperatures drop, so does battery performance: range, charging speed and regenerative braking all take a hit. For first-time EV users, a few simple steps can make all the difference when planning winter journeys – and rather than being surprised by the drop-off in range performance, you can be better prepared for those critical business journeys this winter.

How much range is lost in the cold?

Real-world testing shows that most electric cars lose between 10 and 20 percent of their range in freezing conditions. For a car that would normally have a range of 280 miles in the summer, the effect of the cold weather can reduce this to around 225 miles.

Batteries work best when the weather is mild, but when the mercury drops, the chemical reactions inside slow down. At about –10°C, range can fall by roughly a quarter, while in extreme cold some cars may lose up to 40 percent. Short urban trips are least affected, but high-speed motorway driving magnifies the loss.

Cold temperatures also mean slower charging. A cold battery can’t absorb power as efficiently, and the car may automatically limit charging speeds to protect the cells that make up the battery. Even using a rapid charger, drivers might notice that charging takes longer than usual in winter.

How to plan ahead

Because of this, it pays to plan journeys with an extra margin. Apps that show live charger availability are essential for long trips. Drivers should also expect the battery percentage to drop more quickly when running the cabin heater, demisters and lights for extended periods.

Pre-conditioning the car before departure helps. Most EVs allow drivers to warm up the cabin and battery while still plugged in, using grid power rather than battery energy. This simple step can preserve range and make the first few miles more efficient.

Simple ways to protect range

A few habits can help reduce energy use on cold days.

  • Keep the car plugged in whenever possible so the battery maintains a steady temperature.
  • Use heated seats and steering wheel instead of relying only on cabin heating.
  • And if the car has a heat pump, activate the energy-saving or “eco” climate mode to improve efficiency.

Driving style also matters. Smooth acceleration, gentle braking and steady cruising speeds all help maintain range when temperatures fall. Regenerative braking is often less effective in cold weather, so allowing more stopping distance is good practice.

Making EVs winter-ready

Modern electric cars are built to cope with winter, and many now include thermal management systems that warm the battery automatically. These features use a small amount of energy but keep charging times and range more consistent. Still, awareness and preparation remain the key factors for efficient winter driving.
