Electric cars more reliable than petrol or diesel cars says breakdown organisation

Start Rescue, a leading breakdown service in the UK, has released new data debunking the myth of unreliable electric vehicles (EVs). Their findings show EVs are significantly less likely to need roadside assistance compared to traditional petrol or diesel cars.

According to Start Rescue, EVs are 59% less likely to require a breakdown call-out compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. This applies to EVs ranging from brand new to 10 years old.

“This might surprise some drivers, but with over a million EVs on UK roads, choosing an electric car means you’re less likely to be stranded on the side of the road.”

Lee Puffett, Managing Director of Start Rescue

Puffett goes on to say that concerns about EV reliability are more perception than reality. Unlike phone or laptop batteries, EV batteries are designed for longevity and offer ample driving range. However, he emphasises the importance of maintaining the 12-volt battery, which, similar to fuel-powered cars, powers essential functions like lights, wipers, and the dashboard.

The good news is that EVs are even less prone to dead 12-volt battery issues compared to their petrol and diesel counterparts. Start Rescue’s data shows that only 23.7% of EV breakdowns are due to a flat 12-volt battery, whereas this number jumps to 29.7% for petrol and diesel vehicles. Additionally, regular use helps keep the 12-volt battery healthy, preventing breakdowns as EVs rely on this system for functions like unlocking doors and starting the car.
