Fleets saved additional cost of fuel duty rise

Fleets running diesel vehicles, particularly vans, will be hugely relieved to hear that the fuel duty rise of 5p per litre, due in September, has been shelved until at least December.

The announcement was made on 20 May 2026 during Prime Minister’s Question Time.

Current fuel prices are racing upwards in reaction to the conflict in Iran and the stifling of fuel supplies. According to the RAC Fuel Watch, diesel has reached 185.73p per litre, while petrol is at 158.73p.

Fuel prices are now at the same level as they were when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 which triggered a huge fuel shock.

“Managing fuel costs is critical for fleets and always has been,” commented Mike Manners. “But now, more than ever, it is  essential fleets have a laser focus on containing running costs.

“There are plenty of tools available to fleets, from fuel cards which can pinpoint excessive fuel consumption to telematics that can route more effectively as well as point out exceptions to driving standards, which can all help drive down fuel costs.”
