HMRC changes EV reimbursement for public charging in March 2026 Advisory Fuel Rates

There are new Advisory Fuel Rates (AFRs) available from HMRC, effective from 1 March 2026. The latest rates feature a change to the newly introduced public charging rate.

Since September last year, HMRC has split the Advisory Electricity Rate (AER) between a home charging rate and a public charging rate.

For drivers charging at home, the 7 pence per mile rate has not changed from the previous quarter, while the public charging rate has increased by a penny to 15p.

For drivers of petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles, there has been no change in the rates from the previous quarter.

Both the AFR and AER rates should be used for drivers that claim business mileage for their company car for their employer to reimburse them. Or if the company pays all fuel costs, for drivers to reimburse their company for private usage, thereby avoiding prohibitive Fuel Tax.

For hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivers, the relevant petrol or diesel rates apply.
