New Nissan Ariya electric SUV: six reasons to say ‘hiya, Ariya’

The Nissan Ariya is the radical-looking new electric SUV from the company that gave us the pioneering Nissan Leaf EV. That car was launched more than a decade ago, years ahead of rival brands – and the new Nissan Ariya has now arrived to capitalise on all that experience and insight.

A family-sized premium electric SUV, the Nissan Ariya is offered with a choice of two battery sizes, 63kWh or 87kWh. Drivers also have the choice of either front-wheel drive or e-4orce four-wheel drive. As for versions, it’s either Advance or Evolve: both are extremely well-equipped.

The Nissan Ariya takes on rivals such as the Volvo XC40 Recharge, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Skoda Enyaq iV, Toyota BZ4X and Volkswagen ID.4.

Here are six reasons why you might pick the Ariya over those six alternative SUVs.

1 Futuristic styling

The Nissan Ariya is genuinely striking. It is uniquely futuristic, with clean, ultra-bold lines and flowing, purist surfaces. It makes conventional cars look a bit old-fashioned. A similar approach inside delivers a lounge-like interior, with an open-plan feel and premium detailing. We love the haptic touch-sensitive controls and the 12.3-inch dual-screen display is jam-packed with information.

2 Exciting performance

The Nissan Ariya is offered with three different power outputs. Even the entry-level model with the 63kWh battery has 217PS, which is good for 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds; upgrade to the 87kWh battery, and this increases to 242PS. The range-topping 87kWh e-4orce version has an exciting 305PS and that delivers 0-62mph acceleration in just 5.7 seconds.

3 Long electric range

All Nissan Ariyas have an electric driving range of at least 250 miles. Move up from the 63kWh battery to the 87kWh option, and the total EV range grows to almost 330 miles. Even the high-performance e-4orce version has a range of around 310 miles.

All Nissan Ariya versions can also use 130kW DC high-speed chargers. It means 165 miles of range can be added to the 63kWh version in just 30 minutes. The 87kWh alternative performs even better, with 217 miles of range added in 30 minutes. A 22kW AC charger is standard on all but the entry-level version.

4 Spacious and practical

The cleverly-configured Nissan Ariya has been designed to be spacious and practical. Despite measuring less than 4.6 metres long, it has a generous amount of passenger space both front and rear, helped by tricks such as moving the climate control system under the bonnet. This liberates an open-plan dashboard and ‘walk-through’ flat-floor cabin.

Neat touches abound, from the electrically-adjustable centre console on Evolve grade, to the supportive ‘zero gravity’ seats, to the dedicated area in the boot for storing charging cables – something feedback from Nissan Leaf owners encouraged the designers to focus on. Regular Nissan Ariyas have a 466-litre boot; Ariya e-4orce versions have a 408-litre load bay – and can tow up to 1,500kg, double the towing capacity of front-wheel drive Ariya.

5 Intelligent and connected

The Nissan Ariya has an infotainment system with advanced voice recognition. It’s so smart, it delivers ‘touchless’ in-vehicle assistance, including intelligent route planning that calculates the best route based on real-time charging station availability and remaining battery. The Nissan Connect Services App offers remote access through a smartphone, while Nissan has also built in Amazon Alexa, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto.

6 Well equipped

We mentioned a generous level of equipment: core Advance grade features Nissan ProPilot with navi-link, full auto park, 360-dgree around view monitor, and intelligent cruise control. Evolve adds yet more, including an electric panoramic glass roof, 10-speaker Bose sound system, head-up display, ProPilot Park and black upholstery with synthetic leather and Ultrasuede inserts.
