UK EV charging network sees major expansion in early 2024

FLEETS moving to electric vehicles will welcome new data from chargepoint location service Zapmap.

The website has revealed a significant boost in the UK’s public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure during the first quarter of 2024.

Installation rates of public chargers jumped by 35% compared to the 2023 average, with a notable focus on high-powered charging hubs.

It comes as Osprey reveals it has now installed 1,000 public rapid chargers and during Q1 InstaVolt has installed a record number of rapid chargers: 128 chargers at 44 sites including its latest superhub at Syon Park in West London (pictured).

The report highlights several key figures:

  • The UK now boasts over 59,590 public charging devices, a 10.5% increase since the end of 2023 and a substantial 47% year-on-year increase.
  • In the first three months of 2024 alone, more than 5,725 new charge points were installed, with high-powered devices accounting for a quarter of these installations.
  • Leading providers including InstaVolt, Tesla, bp pulse, Osprey, and GRIDSERVE played a major role, collectively adding 839 chargers. Osprey led the way with over 350 installations.
  • Accessibility also improved, as nearly 1,500 new on-street chargers were added for those without home charging options.

“The increasing rate at which rapid chargers are being rolled out should give more confidence to fleets to electrify. And for those companies that have already gone electric, it will undoubtedly give help their drivers who have switched to plan business journeys with greater certainty.”
