Volkswagen ID. Polo revives iconic name with electric hatchback built for fleet promise

Volkswagen has confirmed the arrival of the ID. Polo, an all-electric successor to the ID.2all concept, with UK deliveries expected in 2026. The car marks a shift in VW’s strategy by pairing its electric “ID.” branding with one of its most recognised legacy nameplates, a move aimed at delivering familiarity, value and continuity to both business fleets and private buyers.

Designed on Volkswagen’s modular MEB Entry platform, the ID. Polo will feature front-wheel drive and two battery options: 38kWh and 56kWh. Depending on configuration, WLTP range is expected to reach between 220 and 280 miles. Rapid charging of up to 125kW will allow competitive recharging times, helping to reduce downtime for fleet drivers on longer routes.

The standard version is likely to offer around 178bhp, with a higher-powered GTI variant reaching an estimated 223bhp. A firm 0–62mph time has not been confirmed, but the performance model is expected to exceed the acceleration figures of the current petrol Polo GTI. Both versions are expected to use simplified drivetrains to reduce complexity and cost.

Compact in size but modern in design, the ID. Polo measures approximately 4,053mm in length with a 2,600mm wheelbase. VW says the interior will reflect the brand’s latest design cues while reintroducing physical controls for essential functions, a response to customer feedback on fully digital layouts in earlier ID. models. Cabin space and storage will be optimised for everyday use, making the ID. Polo a practical fit for both business and personal users.

Pricing is expected to start from £22,000, positioning the ID. Polo among the more affordable all-electric hatchbacks. This makes it a strategic choice for salary sacrifice schemes and budget-conscious fleet operators seeking to reduce BiK liability and total cost of ownership. The GTI version is expected to arrive later, carrying a higher premium.

“Polo has always stood for quality, safety and democratisation of innovations,” said Martin Sander, VW Board Member for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales. “The new ID. Polo combines these characteristics and will be launched with its new name in the Polo’s 50th anniversary year.”

With rivals including the Renault 5 E-Tech, Vauxhall Corsa Electric and MG4 EV, the ID. Polo arrives in a competitive space, but Volkswagen’s scale, reputation and established footprint will likely ensure strong demand especially in the fleet sector. Full UK specifications and business leasing offers will be confirmed closer to launch.
