Volvo’s ‘made-to-measure’ seatbelt earns global recognition ahead of EX60 launch

Volvo has once again pushed the boundaries of automotive safety. Its latest innovation, a world-first multi-adaptive seatbelt, will debut in the upcoming fully electric EX60 SUV, set to be revealed in January 2026. The technology has already been named one of TIME magazine’s Best Inventions of 2025, highlighting its potential to redefine occupant protection.

The new seatbelt adjusts itself in real time to the person wearing it and the conditions outside the car. Using data from the EX60’s advanced network of interior and exterior sensors, it tailors restraint force based on the occupant’s height, weight, body shape and seating position, as well as the severity of any potential collision.

For instance, a larger driver in a serious crash will receive a stronger belt load to reduce head injury risk, while a smaller passenger in a milder impact will receive a gentler setting to lower the chance of rib injury. In total, the system can vary its load profile far more precisely than any previous design, turning what was once a fixed device into an intelligent safety system.

Volvo says the EX60’s seatbelt will continue learning long after it leaves the factory. The system is designed to evolve via over-the-air software updates, improving its response as the company collects more real-world data. This means every EX60 could become safer over time, fine-tuning its protection based on new crash insights and occupant information.

It’s a fitting development for Volvo, the brand that invented the modern three-point seatbelt back in 1959, a device credited with saving over a million lives. The new EX60 builds on that legacy with digital intelligence and adaptive restraint technology, bringing Volvo’s long-held vision of zero fatalities a step closer.

Åsa Haglund, Head of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre, said:

“We are proud to be recognised by TIME as a leader in automotive safety. With the multi-adaptive safety belt in the upcoming EX60, we’re leveraging real-time data to adapt to the situation and the person wearing it – providing smarter, personalised protection that can help reduce injury.”

The multi-adaptive seatbelt follows last year’s success of Volvo’s Driver Understanding System, another safety feature that was also recognised by TIME in 2024. That system uses real-time sensors to monitor driver alertness and can intervene if fatigue or distraction is detected.

The all-new Volvo EX60, featuring this pioneering technology, will make its global debut during a livestreamed event from Stockholm on 21 January 2026.
